How to Clean a Microwave: Easy Steps for a Fresh, Odor-Free Kitchen Appliance
Keeping your microwave clean is not just about appearance — it’s also essential for hygiene, performance, and even energy efficiency. In busy cities like Lagos, Nigeria, where kitchen appliances are used daily, knowing the right way to clean your microwave helps extend its lifespan and keeps your kitchen smelling fresh.
Every time you heat up food, small spills and splatters can stick to the interior walls. Over time, this buildup leads to unpleasant odors and even affects how evenly your food cooks. Regular cleaning prevents:
Bad smells caused by leftover food particles
Germ and bacteria growth inside the microwave
Stains and sticky surfaces
Smoke or burning smells from dried-up food residue
You don’t need fancy products — simple household items will do. Gather these:
A microwave-safe bowl
Water
White vinegar or lemon juice
A sponge or microfiber cloth
Optional: baking soda for deep cleaning tough stains
Fill your microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water.
Add two tablespoons of white vinegar or half a sliced lemon.
Place the bowl inside the microwave.
Run it on high heat for 5 minutes.
This creates steam that loosens grease, stains, and food particles.
After it’s done, leave the door closed for 2–3 minutes to let the steam work its magic.
Carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot).
Use a clean cloth or sponge to wipe the walls, ceiling, and base of the microwave.
For stubborn spots, dip your sponge in baking soda mixed with water and gently scrub.
Don’t forget to clean the microwave door and handle, where grease often builds up.
Remove the glass turntable and wash it like a regular dish — warm water, soap, and a sponge.
Dry it completely before placing it back in the microwave.
If odors remain, leave an open bowl of baking soda inside overnight. It absorbs lingering smells naturally.
Always cover your food before heating.
Wipe small spills immediately.
Deep-clean once a week if used frequently.
Avoid using harsh chemicals — they can damage the surface.
